The Gospel Coalition app review

Posted by Anne Witton on Thursday, July 9, 2015 Under: App review

I’m a fan of the Gospel Coalition website for its mix of news, opinion, reviews, videos and talks from a range of respected Christian commentators*. The Gospel Coalition is a fellowship of conservative evangelical churches throughout North America, directed by Tim Keller and Don Carson (who I still think bears an uncanny resemblance to Johnny Ball).

The iOS and Android apps make that content easily accessible on mobile devices, so I thought I’d check them out. My first impression of the iPad app was very good. No nasty typefaces or bad design here, with the whole app displaying a slick and well-made look. The landing page displays the latest articles in a flipboard-style spread making it easy to browse the selection. There are also nine blogs from Christian leaders which all have their own flipboard-style landing pages. The user interface is very intuitive and it’s easy to navigate back and forth and share content to social networks or via email and text.

Topics range from theological teaching centred on particular Biblical books, to lifestyle and ethical questions like faith in the workplace and relationships, as well as a good dose of culture, art and tools for ministry.

The media section includes conference talks, conversations and podcasts and there’s some really interesting stuff on there, from ‘What is the Gospel?’ to the intriguingly-titled ‘When Books Taste Like Vegetables.’

By far the biggest frustration with the app is that there appears to be no search feature, so you’re out of luck if you want to read something on a particular topic. It would also be great if articles could be saved for reading later. However, if you just want some interesting Christian writing to read or media to enjoy, then this is a good app to have on your phone or tablet. The app is also tiny so it won’t hog valuable storage on your device.

Price - Free
Size - 6.6MB

* I’m obviously not endorsing everything they say and I think part of healthy engagement is healthy disagreement, just to be clear about that. I also think it’s a shame that the content is very heavily male-written and hope this will change in time.
